A voltage regulator is responsible for the conservation of the voltage in a power source. From the name itself, this electronic device regulates and makes sure that the voltage level is still within its limits and boundaries. Usually these voltage regulators can be found in the power supplies of our personal computers. It can also be seen in the central power station of generator plants as well as in the alternators of automobiles. Most voltage regulators have three “legs” attached to a black box or tiny compartment. It can work perfectly with most types of power supplies, including the 24v power supply.

What is the Purpose of a Voltage Regulator?

Without a voltage regulator, most of our electric appliances will be ruined because of the unstable raw current that a power supply is constantly producing. With this device, the amount of voltage produced by a power supply can be maintained.

  • If the amount of voltage produced by a power supply continually exceeds its limits, a passive voltage regulator can be used to fix this problem. Passive voltage regulators can minimize the amount of current produced by the power supply by converting the entire residue current or energy as heat. On a side note, in order to let the excess heat evaporate, these passive regulators will also need a heat sink.
  • In the case of power supplies that produce a lesser amount of current than required, active voltage regulators can be used. These active regulators work by using a negative feedback loop that will help in regulating the current. This negative feedback loop can also help in the modification of the circuit’s voltage.
  • Voltage regulators can also function by completely regulating all the sudden and significant changes in the voltage of a circuit. If ever the voltage drops to a level that is smaller than the limit, then it will connect to a valve that has a high current. Likewise, if the amount of voltage produced, it can connect to another valve that has a low current.

Types of Voltage Regulators

Currently, there are at least four types of voltage regulators. Although these vary greatly when it comes to their functions, their cost depends largely on the materials used to make them and the manufacturer.

If you want voltage regulators that can function very efficiently, then you cannot go wrong with a step-up shunt switching regulator. This type of regulator is considered to be the best one if based on its general use. The step-up shunt switching regulator can be used by a lot of power supplies, including the 24v power supply.

If you are on a budget people will probably suggest that you should get a series pass voltage regulator. This is considered to be the most economical of all voltage regulators and for a reason too. This type functions poorly and is sometimes considered to be too volatile as it is not that effective in regulating the current produced by your 24v power supply.

Where To Buy

Voltage regulators, along with power supplies, can be bought in most electronic or computer shops. You can also buy online however you have to invest in reliable and trustworthy shops so you can get your money’s worth in products.
